Q & A

Here you can ask any questions on any topic of VTK, and you will get a definitive answer, or at least an opinion and comment if a definitive answer is not possible.  I will try to answer the questions as best I can one way or another. It may be, though, in the words of Sifu Barry Lee, ‘Sometimes, the answer to your question is “Shut up and Train!”‘. And quite often, for the development of the student, the answer should be worked out by the student, and merely confirmed by the teacher. Since I cannot do that except with my own students, the answers may in fact be not what you are looking for for your own development, but you will get them anyway, and lose that opportunity for that particular part of your own development as a result.

There are no stupid questions, but there are good and bad ones. A good question demonstrates that the student is ready for the answer, usually because it contains part of the answer already, and is usually about confirmation, with perhaps a request for more detail.

If, on the odd occasion, there is anything I am not sure about, I will check with the other teachers in the Barry Lee lineage, including Barry himself if he is available for comment, or if it is about other matters or other lineages, I will check as near as I can with whoever is mostly likely to know the answers. I know and am in contact with many of the more knowledgeable teachers of many of the lineages.

Some of the questions will have longer and more complex answers that will no doubt be converted to articles or, more likely, posts. There will be a category of posts called “Answers to Questions” for this latter purpose.

So how is Barry doing these days. Is he able to teach and train after his horrific motorbike accident? Regards Gordon

The best answer is to ask Frank, the teacher there. It probably means you are standing still, and not moving in, but without seeing it, I can’t comment.

Thank you Nev. Your approval means a lot to me, with you as close to Sifu Lee as you are.

Bill, the detail you have put into your material and your emphasis on so many seemingly minor aspects that are in fact so crucial to a good standard leaves most others in the dust. It is refreshing to read and follow your diagrams. This is how the style should be taught, not as in much of the rubbish on the net.
